Speech & Debate

Debate

The competitive debate team competes in the OSSAA, National Forensic League, and Tournament of Champions qualifier tournaments. “We strive for distinction in team policy, Lincoln Douglas, foreign extemporaneous speaking, domestic extemporaneous speaking, and Congress debate fields,” Savill added. Utilizing novice, junior varsity and varsity squads, the team pursues a mix of stock issue debating alongside more esoteric tactics such as creative and original critiques.

Schedules and Results

Plano Tournament: September 1-2, 2017
We achieved our goal! We have tried for many years to get to the elimination rounds of a Texas varsity tournament and we finally did it. Congratulations to Jared D. and Olivia S. for breaking to the quarterfinals, achieving 5th place.

Grapevine Classic (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): September 8-9, 2017
We are still trying to figure out how to prepare for this tournament to be successful when it is so early in the year. It is growing in popularity and had teams from all over the country. We will keep trying next year.

Greenhill Fall Classic (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): September 15-16, 2017
The varsity team has competed in many Texas tournaments starting three years ago. I remember one time (Grapevine) where we got last and next to last (out of 143 teams). The squad has labored, attended camps, fought hard, got knocked down (over and over) and back up again, and we finally did it. We had two teams score a winning record at the Greenhill TOC qualifier: sophomores Jackson H. and Elizabeth C. and also Jared D. (who debated solo since Olivia was sick) went 3 – 3.

Out of 113 teams from twenty states:

  • Jared D. achieved 45th place.
  • Jackson H. and Elizabeth C. achieved 64th place.

We also tied with a team from Heritage Hall as the best record from an Oklahoma school. Great work everyone!

Edmond North: September 29-30, 2017
We had a great first tournament for the whole squad. I am pleased to announce the following results:

5A Policy Debate

  • 1st place – Gardner R. and Thomas W.
  • 2nd place – Halle B. and Megan S.
  • 2nd place speaker – Jared D.

Novice Policy

  • 4th place – Garrett H. and Luke R. (Luke is in the 7th grade and this is his first tournament!)
  • 2nd place Best Speaker – Blake Q.

Would also like to give a shoutout to Blaine Y. who, out of 49 debaters from received 7th place speaker, as a 7th grader! Amazing job Blaine.

St. Mark’s Heart of Texas (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): October 13-16, 2017
The hardest tournament we have ever qualified to get an invite. We participated in the sophomore and varsity division and learned a lot about how to compete at this national level.

Heritage Hall (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): October 20-21, 2017
I am pleased to announce that Gavin C. and Alex N. won the Heritage Hall Novice tournament! Competing against 22 teams from five states, they broke to the quarterfinals as the fifth seed. They beat the fourth seed, then the first seed, then the second seed from the Barstow school in Kansas City, Missouri for the win! We have tried as a squad for five years to win this novice Tournament of Champions tournament but have only achieved 5th place twice. Congratulations to Alex and Gavin!

Our varsity squad fought well with one team, Elizabeth C. and Jackson H., achieving a 3 and 3 record against 68 teams from seven states. We were so close to breaking into the octofinals at a TOC tournament, which we have never done yet. We will keep trying.

Moore: November 3-4, 2017
The team did well! Go Knights!

5A Policy

  • 1st – Halle B. and Megan S.
  • 2nd – Hunter D. and Sam I.
  • 3rd – Elizabeth C. and Jackson H.

Novice Policy

  • 3rd – Charlie R. and Nicholas N.

UT Austin Longhorn Classic (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): December 1-2, 2017
Varsity:

  • In five years of debating at this tournament, we have never done better than two wins in the prelim rounds (out of 6). Jared D. and Olivia S. won 3 rounds and Elizabeth C. and Jackson H. also won three rounds! If Jared and Olivia had won one more round, they would have broke to the elim rounds, they were so close.
  • Jared D. achieved 14th speaker out of 244 debaters! We have never received a speaker award at this tournament.
  • The other four varsity teams each won two rounds. This is the most amount of wins we have ever done at this tournament.

Novice

  • In the five years we have competed, we have never done better than 5th place (once) and twice we got knocked out in the top 16 round. This year, we swept the finals! Garrett B. and Jackson R. win first place with Gavin C. and Alex N. getting second!
  • Alex N. achieved 6th place speaker out of 110 debaters!
  • Garrett B. wins 17th place speaker!

Crossings Christian Gauntlet: January 12-13, 2018
We hosted our first tournament ever! Even though it was small, we tried our best to make it a well-operated and on-time tournament with great trophies, judges, and food. We hope to host everyone next year!

Edmond Santa Fe: January 26-27, 2018
We had a great time at Edmond Santa Fe. Here are the results!

Champ Policy – this division, with teams from Moore, Norman North, Edmond North, Heritage Hall, and Guymon, has always been difficult for us and we have not had much success over the past couple of years. But this year, we had success!

  • 1st – Jared D. and Hunter D.
  • 3rd – Elizabeth C. and Jackson H.

Champ Best Speaker

  • 1st – Jared D.
  • 4th – Elizabeth C.

Colleyville Heritage (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): February 2-3, 2018
This tournament, right in the middle of the flu season, was a tough tournament for us. Last year we missed it cause I had the flu and the year before we had quite a bit sick. Out of 6 teams we took, only 2 were at full strength and four had to debate solo most of the time. Out of 13 people going, only 4 people have not gotten sick so far.

I am pleased to report though that we did the best ever in the novice division at this tough tournament. With the likes of national power house teams like Greenhill, St. Marks, and Jesuit present, Garrett B. and Jackson R. attained third place out of 28 teams. Garrett received 2nd place Best Speaker and Jackson got 5th place Best Speaker. 8th grader Alex N, debating solo and sick, had a 3 and 2 record and would have made the quarterfinals if they allowed mavericks to advance. He also achieved 6th place Best Speaker!

Stanford University (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): February 9-10, 2018
We had a good time going to Stanford for their junior varsity tournament. Taking two 8th grade teams, one almost made it to the elimination rounds. It was interesting seeing the west coast debate community. Congratulations to Garrett B. who got 18th speaker out of 98 debaters at this very tough national level tournament.

Seminole State: February 9, 2018
Congratulations to the team for doing so well at Seminole!

National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament Qualifier: March 1-2, 2018
This tournament includes all of 3A – 6A schools in western Oklahoma (30 teams) in a special tournament: Everyone debates and once you lose twice you are out. The last three teams standing qualify to represent West OK at the National Tournament in Fort Lauderdale. The best we have ever done is 5th place four years ago but, this year, Jared D. and Olivia S. got 4th place and are the first alternate to the tournament. They debated seven rounds (five against the team from Moore) and Jared and Olivia lost to the Moore A team twice, both on 2-1 decisions. So close, but very happy with our results.

Greenhill Fall Classic (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): September 16-17, 2016
The varsity team got two teams admitted to this invitational only tournament and the teams of Jared D. and Dalton S. alongside Emma H. and Olivia S. again learned a lot about how to compete at this elite level. We have our work cut out for us.

University of North Texas: October 28-29, 2016
Varsity CX (47 teams, 19 schools from 3 states): We have never made it to the elimination rounds in a Texas varsity tournament and we had three teams that almost made it. All three had records of 3-1 going into the fifth and final preliminary round. If any one of them won, we would have achieved our squad goal for the year of breaking to the elim rounds. All three fell short (one team losing to the team that made it to the finals) but having three teams that close to breaking is a big accomplishment. Well done team!

Novice CX (37 teams, 12 schools from 3 states): Out of four years of debating in Texas novice, our best result was making it to the round of 16 (octofinals) before losing. But, at this tournament, the middle school team came in force! Debating against mostly freshmen and sophomores with the occasional junior, 8th graders Sam I. and Hunter D. made it to the quarterfinals (5th place) before falling to eventual champion St. Mark’s. Caleb K. and Matthew K. (debating 9 two-hour rounds in two days!) made it all the way to the finals and lost to St. Mark’s (2nd place). I am so proud of how hard the team has worked to achieve this milestone in the very competitive Texas circuit.

Our first year at this very tough national novice tournament. With 31 teams from California, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia (they sent their high school novice state champion, a team from Woodward Academy) and even Washington, D.C., we took a “let’s just go down and see what it is like” exploratory mindset as my middle school teams debated against mostly freshmen and sophomores. They debated seven rounds total and persevered through a lot of fatigue, especially in the 6th and 7th rounds on Saturday.

  • 6th place – Elizabeth C. and Olivia S.
  • 21st place – Caleb K. and Hunter D.

The Crossings Debate squad competed at and against the following levels:

Longhorn Classic, U of Texas, Austin, (Tournament of Champions Qualifier): Nov 30-Dec 1, 2012
Out of 48 teams from around the nation in the junior varsity division, only the top 16 advanced to the octofinals round. Christopher W. and Ezra T., in their first tournament together as a team, placed 17th and just missed the cut. Shelby W. and Christian B. broke 14th and had to face the 4th seed team from Stephen F. Austin High School (enrollment 2500). After a tough round, Crossings fell but achieved 14th place. We learned a lot about the level of competition at the regional/national level.

Debating teams from all over the region (and one from a perennial national power, St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas), our teams received a good, tough look at the level of competition at the near-national level. • First place: Franki K. and Rachel C.

Edmond Santa Fe (5A/6A): January 27-28, 2012
Gabby K. and Christian B. did very well at this tournament. Out of six 6A/5A champ teams (teams that have already qualified for the regional tournament by placing 1, 2, or 3rd in a previous 6A/5A tournament), they tied for second with four other teams with a 2 win, 2 loss record. When there is a tie like that, the tie is broken by the number of speaker points the team receives and unfortunately we were not the top 2-2 team in points so we did not break to the Saturday finals round. Overall, a great learning experience for us all.

Norman North (6A): February 24-25, 2012
Christian B. and Gabriella K. finished 2 and 2 and came very close to winning a third round which means they almost made it to the quarterfinals of the biggest 5A/6A Champion-level debate tournament in the state this year. We had a good time at this tournament.

National Forensic League District Tournament at OU (3A/4A/5A/6A): March 2-3, 2012
Results: Out of a field of 34 teams in this double-elimination brawl with most of the teams from 6A schools, the team of Shelby W. and Ezra T. won one debate before falling in the third round. Congratulations to both teams (Christian B. and Gabby K. also participated) for competing at this very tough tournament!

OSSAA Regional Tournament (3A): March 30, 2012
Results: Great job debaters! All our teams qualified for the state tournament and will be a second and third seed, respectively. They represented Crossings well and even had a good time when having to debate each other in the third round.

  • Second place: Ezra T. and Shelby W.
  • Fourth place: Gabby K. and Christian B.

OSSAA State Tournament at OU (3A): April 12-14, 2012

Our goal is to always try our best in every round and promote Christ-centered excellence.
