Crossings Christian School
Student Support ServicesThe Student Support Services program at Crossings Christian School serves students identified as having cognitive, medical, psychological, or physical conditions that may interfere with their academic performance.
During the admissions process, Student Support Services staff will work with a potential student, his/her family, and the admissions staff to determine if Crossings is an appropriate placement.
The goal of the Student Support Services program at the Lower School level is to provide remediation of language learning differences (reading, writing, spelling, and/or handwriting), and to provide educational support through monitoring programs. The goal of the Student Support Services program at the Middle/Upper School is to provide support to students with learning differences through monitoring programs and a study lab in order to prepare them to succeed in college and the workplace.
To be considered for support services at Crossings, the learning and physical disabilities must be fully documented by appropriate professionals, and updated every three years. This documentation will provide the school staff with a clear definition of a student’s strengths and weaknesses and will facilitate the development of an appropriate academic support plan.
Each teacher on the Student Support Services team is certified and trained to meet the diverse and unique needs of the students.
Lower School Services
For students in first or second grade, “Take Flight” Alphabetic Phonics is available for students with language learning difficulties. First grade students participate in the training program for three years. Second grade students participate in the training program for two years. Students receive intense, explicit, and systematic therapeutic instruction for one hour each day, five days per week, in a small group setting (five students maximum). Classes are available on a first come/first serve basis, and there is an additional tuition charge. Tuition fees for the “Take Flight” program include participation in a monitoring program with classroom accommodations.
Intervention services may also be provided on an individual basis to children who don’t qualify for the “Take Flight” program but are identified as needing remediation in a specific area of language learning. Individual pullout services are provided on a first come/first serve basis, and there is an additional tuition charge.
A Monitoring Program is also available to qualifying students in the Lower School and includes an accommodations plan that states the necessary accommodations for the student’s successful completion of regular, mainstream classes. Accommodations are tailored specifically to the student’s needs and may include pre-teach materials, extended time on exams, testing in a non-distracting environment, copies of instructors’ notes, guided lecture notes, or study guides. Accommodations plans are written at the beginning of each school year or upon a student’s enrollment in the monitoring program. An additional tuition fee is charged for the monitoring program.
Educational assessment services are provided to determine learning strengths and weaknesses and to identify learning differences. These assessments are available for an additional charge. Educational testing is required to qualify a student for support services. Updated testing is required every three years to substantiate an ongoing need for intervention and/or accommodations. Testing may be obtained either through certified personnel at Crossings or from qualified outside professionals.
Middle/Upper School
In the Middle/Upper School, students may elect to participate in either the Monitoring Program or in the Monitoring Program with Study Lab. These services are designed to reinforce instruction in academic skills.
The Monitoring Program is available to qualifying students and includes an accommodations plan that states the necessary accommodations for the student’s successful completion of regular, mainstream classes. Accommodations are tailored specifically to the student’s needs and may include pre-teach materials, extended time on exams, testing in a non-distracting environment, copies of instructors’ notes or guided lecture notes, study guides, etc. Accommodations plans are written at the beginning of each school year or upon a student’s enrollment in the monitoring program, and an additional tuition fee is charged.
A student participating in the Monitoring Program may also elect to participate in Study Lab. Study Lab is an elective class that is available for qualifying students in grades 6-12. The purpose of Study Lab is to provide a daily opportunity for structured study time and assistance as needed. Study Lab is offered during designated elective hours during the day and there is an additional tuition charge.
Study Lab participation includes:
- • Structured opportunities for the completion of assignments: Each student is required to document assignments in his/her agenda and review the assignments with the Study Lab teacher. The grade for this class is partially based on the student’s daily completion of the agenda to encourage the development of organizational skills.
- • Assistance on assignments as needed: Students will be provided assistance, review of study aids and concepts on an “as needed” basis. The structure of the class does not include individual tutoring.
- • Opportunities for the completion of exams: Students may use their Study Lab time for completing exams from other classes.
- • Limited class size: Each Study Lab class is limited to 10 students to allow the Study Lab teacher to provide the needed support and assistance.
Educational testing is required to qualify a child for participation in the Student Support Services program. These services are available at Crossings for an additional charge. However, testing may be obtained through a qualified outside professional. Updated testing is required every three years to substantiate an ongoing need for accommodations and/or participation in Study Lab.
